Company Overview
John Holmlund Nursery is a family owned and operated wholesale tree nursery located in the fertile valley between Portland, Oregon and the scenic Mt. Hood region. Originating in the late 1960’s. We grow bare-root and container deciduous trees on about 600 acres. There are over 200 varieties of trees in production. Many are selected for their urban forestry requirements: low maintenance, hardiness, disease-insect resistance, stress tolerance, and unique plant features. We are dedicated to growing quality plants and make them available to tree growers, container operations, re-wholesale, and garden centers.
Role of Intern:
As a John Holmlund Nursery Intern, you will learn all aspects of nursery production from our experienced crew leaders and managers during your time in this hands-on internship held at our farm locations in Boring and Gresham OR.
Duties/Tasks:
You will work in all areas of the nursery so that you can gain an understanding of what it takes to grow trees commercially. The work will include spending time in propagation, container yard, and field: pruning, budding, irrigation, planting, IPM and inventory
Understand the management techniques of proper maintenance and timing of tree production. In addition, acquire a basic understanding of some aspects of the administrative aspects of commercial tree production.
Requirements:
Must be pursuing a degree in Horticulture or a related field or have experience in horticulture work and want to learn more.
Can communicate well verbally and in writing.
Able to work Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 4:00pm and some Saturdays.
You can maneuver around the nursery, can lift forty pounds, and can perform repetitive movements like squatting, bending, reaching, pulling, and pushing without any accommodation.

Internal Design
Overview:
In addition to the field work, interns will be given the opportunity to work with each of our farm managers to learn about the nursery.
Weekly meetings will be held to go over what the interns have learned, ask questions and plans for the following week
Tours of local nurseries will be given to learn more about the horticulture industry.
Lean training will be given and the possibility to participate in a kaizen event.
Field Responsibilities:
Learning and safely performing different aspects of commercial horticulture tree production, including but not limited to:
Pruning tree branches
Budding
Rooted cuttings
Fall/Spring field planting
Pest control
Suckering
Paint coding
Counting/ Inventory
Gaining an understanding of integrated pest management programs (IPM), including
Assessment of trees to identify and manage disease, insect problem or other issues. Document with accurate data collection and record keeping.
Soil testing and understanding of results
Understand and maintain healthy soils, potentially including soil testing
Office/ Business Responsibilities:
Inventory
Amount of plant tags
Inventory of farm supplies
Inventory of agricultural chemicals
Check OSHA compliant signs
Basic entry of chemical data
Location/ Setting:
John Holmlund Nursery is located between Mt. Hood and Portland. There are plenty of recreational activities and cultural opportunities. With Mt. Hood and the Columbia Gorge in John Holmlund Nursery’s backyard there is plenty to satisfy anyone who is an outdoor enthusiast. Portland is also a great place to explore different cultures with delicious food.
