At John Holmlund Nursery, LLC, located in Boring, Oregon, grading bare root trees is both an art and a science. This meticulous process ensures that every tree meets industry standards while preserving its health and growth potential. Bare root trees, harvested during their dormant phase without soil around their roots, are handled with exceptional care to maximize their chances of flourishing.

The journey begins with gentle harvesting techniques that protect the delicate root systems. The trees are then brought to our warehouse, where their roots are trimmed, and soil is removed to allow for a thorough inspection of root health and structure. During this process, we carefully check for any signs of disease or damage, ensuring that only the healthiest trees move forward. Each tree is graded with precision, taking into account size, caliper, root structure, and branch symmetry to meet the unique needs of our valued customers.

Once graded, the trees are tied and tagged into convenient bundles of 5 or 10, depending on their size and variety. Our white tags, featuring the John Holmlund Nursery logo, include the trees’ scientific and common names, while a second tag is color-coded to indicate tree size. These bundles are stored under optimal conditions to preserve dormancy, ensuring they are ready for planting when the time comes. This thoughtful and organized approach promotes better growth outcomes, supports sustainability by reducing waste, and builds lasting trust with our customers.
